Sweat Bee on Marigolds

H

oney bees and bumblebees may be the most well-known bees, but those aren’t the only bees buzzing around. Halictidae is the family of bees known as sweat bees. Sweat bees often appear metallic, and they get their name from being attracted to sweat (although I’ve yet to experience any sweat bees landing on me for a drink). Some species are also fairly small, so they can be harder to notice.

Here is a striped sweat bee on marigold flowers. I’ve narrowed down the genus to Lasioglossum or Halictus.
